Cradle of Filth |

Imagine someone consider to bind all Cradle of Filth lyrics into a book, it´ll most likely have the size of a Grimoire. Dani Filth – Master of Screams and Head of the British Extreme Metallers – isn´t just known for breaking the limits, but for his seemingly endless lyrics. Even though his schedule being full and currently busy with the vocals for the latest Chapter on the Cradle of Filth discography, he put his feather and papyri aside to face my inquisition. |

We asked...
| | When you start working on the lyrics for a new song or concept album, how do you get inspired for the lyrics you write?
Dani: When writing lyrics I get inspired by all sorts of things. Books, the occult seasons, films, soundtracks, driving in the countryside, weather etc. I try to live my life surrounded by the things that I have a deep morbid affinity for, so my house is pretty inspirational in the fact that it's full of interesting artefacts, from replica Egyptian sarcophagi through to African/Indian wooden sculptures, masks and skulls, A full size Dr Who Dalek, framed insects, rare books and signed pictures, pantheon statues, weird toys etc etc. Come to think of it I might as well be living in a Victorian museum!!!
I also try to immerse myself in everything pertaining to the subject I'm (trying) to write about.
Do you do research for concept albums? Like when you wrote the lyrics for GODPSEED or VENUS AVERSA?
God yeah! Of course, usually it's a few months worth of reading and writing, note-taking and the such forth. I like to think outside the box as well, so anything I think could colour the concept further, I try to get immersed in. Except in the case of Gilles De Rais, the idea of buggering and murdering children just wasn't for me...
In the working process, do you create some sort of sketch or outline for the story you´d like to tell on the albums, so you know how you´d like to develop the story itself?
Yes, in order for the songs to work with the story and vice versa it is imperative to get a game-plan in action so you know where you are at any one time. It's a bit like putting a tricky jigsaw puzzle together, as you have to think about the music, the songs, the story, the atmosphere, the tension builds in the story, the way it threads together… blah blah blah, all at the same time. Like a film without the visuals.
Aside from your role in CRADLE OF FEAR is there any chance for us to see you acting in a movie again?
Maybe some day as I really enjoyed it. There was always talk of doing a second instalment, whether it was a continuation or not. Unfortunately, something like this is an enormous amount of work and there just hasn't been the window or the funding for it (the original film was part self-financed and mostly made off deferred payments). Still, there's plenty of time, plus a very good friend of mine is a director in a movie company, so I might snatch a few little cameos from time to time.
It is more than obvious that your skill as a writer and poet are more than average, which leads to a natural question if you ever considered writing novels or stories aside from the lyrics you do?
I have written an illustrated poetry book which I was hoping to have published this year. Just poems that I have written from time to time over the years. I have some ideas for stories in my head, but the band keeps me too busy and I do sooo much like my spare time! And not just reading Coleridge and Goethe.
Looking back at over 20 years of Cradle of Filth, is there anything you´d do different, if you could turn back time and start all new?
Plenty of things that are daren't worth uttering. Horrid, unearthly things. That would make your skin crawl and your innards vomit forth. Everything is a learning curve, the trick is to enjoy everything along the way. Your final destination is ultimately, death.
Imagine your daughter Luna would decide to walk your footsteps and start a career as an Extreme Metal Singer, would you approve her choice or try to convince her to pursuit another path?
I somewhat doubt that will ever be her career choice seeing as she listens, for the most part, to chart music. Extreme metal singers have to be weaned from a younger, more basic age! Plus her interests lie in other directions, like explosives and body snatching.
Last but not least: Will we ever get to enjoy Dani Filth playing an instrument other than his amazing vocal-acrobatics on stage?
I could have a dabble on the pink Oboe.
Thank you very much Dani, for taking some time for us even though your currently working on the new album.
