Interview: Pain |
 |
| |
On October the 14th, Pain played a show in the Matrix in Bochum, Germany. Mario K. had the chance to ask mastermind Peter Tägtgren a couple of questions about his band(s) and other topics. |
Datum:
We asked...
| | How are you and how is the tour so far?
Peter: Oh, it's really cool. It's only the fourth gig today, so it's pretty early. But it's pretty fine. We are having a good time and the crowd is good!
What are the plans for Pain for the rest of the year and for 2008?
I'm already writing a new record. I've got five songs finished, so I just keep on writing. This year, we are going to Russia for six or seven gigs. Next year, we are going to do a big tour. We are going to open up for a big band. I can't say anything yet, but it will be announced in a couple of weeks.
You've played a few festival shows in Germany this summer. What do you like more, playing on festivals or at your own club shows?
It's both good. You play in front of a lot of people. In clubs, it is also cool because it is more intensive and you can do your stage as you want it. I like both!
You refreshed the complete line-up of the band. What were the reasons for doing this?
The other two (Andrea Odendahl and Alla Fedynitch) were living in Germany and I was living in Sweden, so it was really hard to get everything working, you know?
When did you start working on PSALMS OF EXTINCTION and how long did you work on the record?
In total: Two years, right after DANCING WITH THE DEAD came out. I started to write a little bit and took a break to do something else and than write again. Not totally all the way. It's good to have a break in between.
What were the influences relating to the record, in the case of lyrics and music?
I don't know. It's just things you hear sometimes and things you experience and stuff like that. The year of making the album influences you.
You released PSALMS OF EXTINCTION in May here in Germany. Are you happy with the reaction from fans and press?
Yeah, it's okay. It's kind of slow but it's picking up. It's getting better and better. The people, more or less, now find out about the new album.
What is your favourite song on PSALMS OF EXTINCTION and why?
I don't know. It all depends in what kind of mood I'm in. Sometimes I like "Just think again" and sometimes I like "Nailed to the Ground" and stuff like that. I kind off like them all. They are a little bit different from each other and it all depends in what mood I am in.
How did you get the record deal with Roadrunner Records?
The old one went out a year ago and so we looked around with Roadrunner because we thought that would be a perfect label for us. I hope they are going to do a good job now and we will see what's going to happen.
Are you satisfied with Roadrunner?
No, not really. But I know it's going to be better.
Could you imagine signing your second band, Hypocrisy, to Roadrunner?
No, that's for Nuclear Blast. Definitely. I am very happy with Nuclear Blast and the way they do the Hypo-stuff.
When will we hear something new from Hypocrisy?
I don't know yet. We are writing material right now. We will see, maybe at the end of the next year.
What do you like more, working and playing shows with Pain or Hypocrisy?
I like both. Pain is my own thing, I do everything myself. With Hypocrisy, we do things together. I think, it's good to have both bands.
I've read that you planed to release a Pain-record with cover versions back in 2003. Will you ever release such a project or are you done with that idea?
There are a few cover-songs that you can download at iTunes. These songs are going to be bonus songs now. I just concentrate on the new stuff.
I've also read that you are going to be a part of the new Children of Bodom-record. What are you going to do with them?
Yeah, I am supposed to do the vocal-producing there. I don't know when it's going to happen.
And you're not going to sing or play guitar?
I don't think so…I don't know! (Laughs)
You are also known for your work as a producer at the Abyss Studios. Which band will you produce next?
I don't know yet, because I'm so busy with my own stuff that I really don't have time to produce anything. It's more or less concentrating on Pain and Hypocrisy right now.
Is there a band you'd love to produce?
I don't know. I mean, there are so many good bands out there, you know? But I don't have any specific band that I want to produce right now.
If a film producer would ask you to contribute the score of a movie, would you do that? What kind of movie do you prefer?
Yeah, of course! I mean, I have done a lot of music for movies in Sweden. For me, it doesn't really matter what kind of movie it is. I guess you just have to find the mood in it and then write the music for it.
What is, in your opinion, the best record of all times and why?
Good question. (Laughs) I don't know, Kiss with DESTROYER from '76. If you listen to it today, it still sounds modern.
Do you have any last words for our readers?
Yeah! I hope people will enjoy the album and I hope to see everybody out there!
Thank you!?
