Valfreya

ValfreyaOdin may bless you! This Valkyrie made me become her prisoner of war with her mindblowing singing style, needless of torture or bribery to make me follow her troups!
Montreals Newcomer in Viking Metal, Valfreya, unleashed a monument of metal with their debut, leaving me no choice but having to do an interview with them!

Date:
 A.K., 21.01.20113

We asked...
Would you tell us more on how Valfreya got together? What´s the tale behind the band?

Crook: I had written several songs that I wanted to perform with a full band. Having a preference for aggressive, glorious and energetic kind of music, the Viking Metal style was the perfect match. I then looked for musicians. The tale behind the band is simple; we want to share our passion with the world. We want the auditors to be part of the tale.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I assume the band's name is somehow related to the northern goddess Freya?

Indeed, In Norse Mythology, Freyja is a goddess associated with beauty and love but also with war and death. She rules over heavenly afterlife field Folkvang and there receives half of those that die in battle and the other half goes to the god Odin, Valhalla. She is also the queen of Valkyries. Valfreya’s music tells a story inspired from Norse Mythology and she is part of the story of the first album.

When I first listed to PATH TO ETERNITY, I got caught by your music from the start. Especially the healthy combination of Viking-/Folk Metal, with a touch of Black Metal made my day. Where do you find your inspiration for your music? I did read you feel inspired by bands like Equillibrium or Moonsorrow, but I bet there´s more to tell.

I am definitely inspired by Moonsorrow and Equillibrium, but also by Wintersun (first album), Dimmu Borgir... etc

Aside from Valfreya´s sound, it was your voice, Crook, that not just gave me goosebumps whilst banging along, but had me amazed and startled at the same time. You not just sing in an almost soprano clean voice, but switch from angelic singing to a shrieking banshee in a blink (And this is a compliment, I assure you!). I can only imagine it takes a lot of training to do so, thereby not ruining your voice, is it?

Yes, I studied classical voice and instrumental composition. I am sure that all the techniques I learned also helped me for my guttural vocals.

When did you start singing, or get involved with music the first place?

I've been singing since I was 8 years old. I was mostly singing in choirs. I started to take private singing lessons when I was 16 years old but my first band experience was at 18 years of age.

You've mentioned on your facebook page, a new acoustic album to come up in 2013. Would you already like to share a few insights to this?

Crook: We are working on an acoustic adaptation of several songs mainly coming from PATH TO ETERNITY.

Hitting the stages: Unfortunately, I didn't have the chance yet, to witness Valfreya live on stage here in Germany, which I hope to happen soon. Still, thanks to modern new media, one could have a taste of your live performances banned to video, which leads me to my next question. Are there any shows on schedule for Germany already?

We would be more than glad to tour Germany. We only need an official invitation from a German promoter.

From the videos I watched, I could tell you really enjoy yourselves on stage, while the crowd goes crazy to your music. Still I wonder, do you feel any stagefright before doing a gig?

Crook: I can’t speak for all the members, but I do not think that any of us feel stagefright before a gig. It’s more exciting than frightening.
Graz'zt: If I may add. The first couple of shows I performed with Valfreya, stagefright was a concern but it is not anymore. I think we all get to enjoy ourselves a lot more now.

Returning to the creative process of writing a song. How does a Valfreya song come to live? Do you create the lyrics first writing the music around it or the other way around?

Crook: We created the story of the album and planned the way we wanted it to flow, we then wrote the songs and completed everything with the lyrics.

Would you share with us how the recording sessions took place, from your point of view? Maybe even a little funny anecdote if anything like this occurred?

Graz'zt: I first recorded all the guitar and bass parts using a click track on my home computer. I had to do all of it because at that time, the lineup was in constant change. We didn't have a bass player and the second guitarist was a new addition to the group.  We then worked with Silverwing studios for the vocals, drums, orchestration and mixing.

To wrap it up, my favorite questions: What would you like to tell your fans?

2013 will be a busy year for Valfreya. As mentioned above, we are working on an acoustic version of some songs from PATH TO ETERNITY. We also are in the process of writing songs for a second album which we would like to start recording by the end of 2013 and we are looking to tour within North America and further if the opportunity arises. We have some good news regarding that but nothing we have the liberty to talk about at the moment.

We wish you all the best and hopefully, we´ll see you rocking the stages here in Germany, too!
